08/18/1999 – Results? You want results? You can’t handle results!

Am I digging myself into a hole or am I getting results? Channel 27 called me and they want to do a story on the @home speed problem. They’ll be at my house at 1:15pm to interview me and get some footage of the web page. Unfortunately their story has to do with the overall speed and not my problem with the network infrastructure.

Channel 27 came over to my house and spent 45 minutes there with me doing different things such as downloading and surfing pages. I found a 3.7mb MP3 and we timed the download. It took 13 minutes. I displayed my web page and listened to an MP3. I am very curious to see how the edited it.

Napolean sent me some e-mail regarding our area. Apparently there are other obsticles in the way that make our area harder to solve. Well, duh! I knew that from day 1. I called Michele Rebholz to reiterate the problem and let her know that my stuff is still broken. Another guy I know get the service installed and he says that it’s super fast. So I’m not sure if all the T1’s are in place and the speed problem is cured or what. All I know is that if the speed problem gets fixed, I’m going to have to yell louder to get myself heard. Napolean also forwarded me the name of a woman from the Isthmus that’s doing a story on Bresnans slow service. I e-mailed her my number and told her to call me. Hopefully there will be another article in the works too.

4:30 an RF guy calls me and says that they were at the house testing the lines outside and couldn’t find a problem. He wanted to set up another appointment to test the RF levels in the house. I told him about the guy who came over on 08/09/1999. He didn’t know about this. I told him what he did and how nothing changed. We both agreed that this probably wasn’t an RF issue. I made the suggestion of installing a second cable jack. Obviously this won’t fix the problem, but it will get the house owners a new cable jack for free and I can get rid of the 200 feet of coax the guy on 08/09/1999 made for me. He said he’d have someone at the house tomorrow at 5 to do that for me. No more two hour windows for me apparently. He also said that he would go to the house and check line status to during the day. He informed me that the new T1’s went in on Tuesday and speeds have increased.

The channel 27 news report was pretty bad as far as I’m concerned. I was only on there for 30 seconds and I only go to say "the left hand doesn’t know what the right hand is doing". 45 minutes of footage and that’s all they can find. What about the 3.7Mb download that took 13 minutes?! That’s what you want to report! I think the problem is that you have non-technical people reporting on technical issues. Blah. Not only that but I told him that I would do the story if he mentioned my name and put my site on tv. What I meant was, tell the people at home what my URL is!

After receiving a bunch of e-mails and discussing out locations, we’ve come to the conclusion that our node is broke. I’m one of five people that hasn’t noticed a speed increase since the new T1’s went into place. I still don’t think that anyone at Bresnan realizes this. I guess I’ll find out what the RF people say about this.
